Caring for Your Hair Extensions: A Complete Guide

When selecting hair extensions, it’s crucial to consider your natural hair’s texture, length, and color. Fine or thin hair may benefit from lightweight tape-in extensions, while thicker or coarser hair might be better suited for clip-in extensions that provide more volume. Choose extensions that closely match your natural hair color and texture for a seamless blend.

For those with short hair, specific extensions designed for shorter lengths may be necessary to achieve a natural appearance. The method of application is another important factor to consider. Options include tape-in, clip-in, sew-in, and fusion extensions, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Research different methods and consult a professional stylist to determine the best option for your hair type and lifestyle. Opt for high-quality extensions made from real human hair, as synthetic alternatives may appear unnatural and fail to blend well with your natural hair. Investing in quality extensions ensures a more natural look and feel, as well as increased longevity with proper care and maintenance.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose hair extensions that match your hair type for a natural look and easy maintenance
  • Proper installation and regular maintenance are essential for the longevity of your hair extensions
  • Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to wash and condition your hair extensions gently
  • Protect your hair extensions from heat damage by using heat protectant products and avoiding excessive heat styling
  • Use a loop brush and style your hair extensions as you would your natural hair, but with extra care to avoid tugging and pulling
  • When it’s time to remove and replace your hair extensions, seek professional help to avoid damage to your natural hair
  • Long-term care and maintenance of your hair extensions require regular trims, deep conditioning treatments, and gentle handling to keep them looking their best

Proper Installation and Maintenance of Hair Extensions

Professional Installation is Key

It’s important to have your extensions installed by a professional stylist who is experienced in the specific method of application you’ve chosen. Improper installation can lead to damage to your natural hair and discomfort, so it’s worth investing in a skilled stylist to ensure a seamless and secure application.

Daily Maintenance Routine

Additionally, it’s important to follow the recommended maintenance routine for your specific type of extensions. This may include regular touch-ups, adjustments, and re-installation as needed. In terms of daily maintenance, it’s important to be gentle with your hair extensions to prevent tangling and breakage. Use a soft-bristle brush or a special extension brush to gently detangle your hair, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots.

Styling and Product Care

When styling your hair, use heat protectant products to shield the extensions from damage caused by hot tools. It’s also important to avoid using products that contain alcohol or oil near the roots of the extensions, as this can cause them to slip or become greasy.

Washing and Conditioning Your Hair Extensions

Proper washing and conditioning are essential for maintaining the quality and appearance of your hair extensions. When washing your hair, use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to prevent stripping the extensions of their natural oils and moisture. Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp and the roots of your hair, being careful not to rub or tangle the extensions.

When conditioning, focus on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding the roots where the extensions are attached. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, ensuring that all product residue is removed. After washing, gently squeeze out excess water from your hair and pat it dry with a soft towel.

Avoid rubbing or wringing out your hair, as this can cause tangling and damage to the extensions. Allow your hair to air dry whenever possible, as excessive heat from blow-drying can cause damage to both your natural hair and the extensions. If you do need to use a blow dryer, use a low heat setting and a diffuser attachment to minimize heat exposure.

It’s also important to avoid sleeping with wet hair, as this can cause tangling and matting of the extensions. Instead, allow your hair to dry completely before going to bed.

Protecting Your Hair Extensions from Heat Damage

Protecting your hair extensions from heat damage is crucial for maintaining their quality and appearance. Heat styling tools such as flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers can cause damage to both your natural hair and the extensions if not used properly. To minimize heat exposure, use a heat protectant spray or serum before using any hot tools on your hair.

This will create a barrier between the heat and your hair, reducing the risk of damage. When using heat styling tools, it’s important to use them on a low to medium heat setting to prevent overheating the extensions. Avoid using hot tools directly on the bonds or tape of the extensions, as this can cause them to melt or become damaged.

Additionally, it’s important to give your hair breaks from heat styling whenever possible. Embrace natural hairstyles or use heatless styling methods such as braiding or twisting to give your hair a break from heat exposure. By taking these precautions, you can protect your extensions from heat damage and ensure that they remain in good condition for longer.

Styling and Brushing Your Hair Extensions

Styling and brushing your hair extensions require a gentle touch to prevent tangling and breakage. When styling your hair, be mindful of the tension you apply to the extensions to avoid putting strain on your natural hair. Use soft elastics or clips when tying up or securing your hair to prevent pulling on the extensions.

Avoid tight hairstyles that can cause tension on the roots of the extensions, as this can lead to discomfort and damage. When brushing your hair extensions, use a soft-bristle brush or a special extension brush designed specifically for detangling without causing damage. Start at the ends of your hair and work your way up towards the roots, gently detangling any knots or tangles as you go.

Be patient and take your time when brushing your hair to prevent pulling or breaking the extensions. It’s also important to avoid brushing or combing your hair when it’s wet, as this can cause damage to both your natural hair and the extensions.

Removing and Replacing Your Hair Extensions

Professional Removal is a Must

It’s essential to have your extensions removed by a professional stylist who is experienced in the specific method of application used. Attempting to remove the extensions yourself can lead to damage or breakage of your natural hair, so it’s best to leave this task to a professional.

Give Your Natural Hair a Break

After removal, it’s important to give your natural hair a break before re-installing new extensions. This will allow your scalp and roots to recover from the tension and weight of the previous extensions. Use this time to deep condition and nourish your natural hair, giving it the care it needs before undergoing another round of extension installation.

Proper Re-Installation and Maintenance

When re-installing new extensions, be sure to follow the recommended maintenance routine for your specific type of extensions to ensure a seamless application and long-lasting results.

Tips for Long-Term Care and Maintenance of Your Hair Extensions

Long-term care and maintenance of your hair extensions are essential for preserving their quality and appearance over time. Regular touch-ups and adjustments are necessary to keep the extensions looking natural and secure. It’s important to follow the recommended maintenance schedule for your specific type of extensions, which may include visits to a professional stylist every 6-8 weeks for adjustments or re-installation as needed.

In addition to regular salon visits, it’s important to maintain a consistent at-home care routine for your extensions. This includes proper washing and conditioning with sulfate-free products, gentle brushing with a soft-bristle brush, and protecting the extensions from heat damage with heat protectant products. Avoiding excessive heat styling and tight hairstyles will also help preserve the quality of your extensions over time.

When sleeping, it’s important to protect your extensions by tying them up in a loose braid or ponytail to prevent tangling and matting while you sleep. Using a silk or satin pillowcase can also help reduce friction on the extensions, preventing tangles and breakage while you sleep. By following these tips for long-term care and maintenance of your hair extensions, you can ensure that they remain in good condition for an extended period of time, allowing you to enjoy beautiful, natural-looking hair for months on end.

Pros and Cons of Clip-In Hair Extensions

Advantages of Clip-in Extensions

One of the main advantages of clip-in extensions is that they can be easily applied and removed at home without the need for professional assistance. They come in a wide range of colors, lengths, and textures, making it easy to find a perfect match for your natural hair.

Limitations of Clip-in Extensions

However, clip-in extensions can be bulky and uncomfortable to wear for long periods, and they may not blend seamlessly with your natural hair if not applied properly. They also require regular maintenance and may not be suitable for those with very fine or thin hair.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Clip-in Extensions

On the other hand, clip-in extensions are a cost-effective way to experiment with different hairstyles without making a long-term commitment. They can be styled, curled, or straightened just like natural hair, providing endless possibilities for creating different looks. However, they may not be suitable for those with active lifestyles or for everyday wear, as they can shift or come loose during physical activities.

Pros and Cons of Tape-In Hair Extensions

Tape-in hair extensions are a semi-permanent method that involves attaching small wefts of hair to the natural hair using adhesive tape. One of the main advantages of tape-in extensions is that they provide a natural look and feel, as the wefts lie flat against the scalp and are virtually undetectable when properly applied. They also require minimal maintenance and can be easily styled and washed like natural hair.

Additionally, tape-in extensions are a great option for those with fine or thin hair, as they are lightweight and do not put as much strain on the natural hair as other methods. However, tape-in extensions can be more expensive than clip-in extensions and may require professional application and removal, which can add to the overall cost. Another drawback of tape-in extensions is that they need to be repositioned every 6-8 weeks as the natural hair grows, which can be time-consuming and costly.

The adhesive used to attach the wefts can also cause damage to the natural hair if not applied or removed properly. Additionally, tape-in extensions may not be suitable for those with oily or sensitive scalps, as the adhesive can cause irritation or discomfort. Overall, tape-in extensions offer a natural and low-maintenance option for adding length and volume to the hair, but they may not be the best choice for those looking for a more affordable or temporary solution.

Pros and Cons of Sew-In Hair Extensions

Sew-in hair extensions, also known as weaves, are a popular method for adding length and volume to the hair using braids or tracks that are sewn into the natural hair. One of the main advantages of sew-in extensions is that they provide a secure and long-lasting solution that can withstand regular washing and styling. They also offer a natural look and feel when properly applied, as the wefts are attached close to the scalp and can be styled in various ways.

Additionally, sew-in extensions are suitable for all hair types and textures and can be used to protect the natural hair from heat damage or over-manipulation. However, sew-in extensions can be time-consuming to apply and may require professional assistance, which can add to the overall cost. Another drawback of sew-in extensions is that they can cause tension and discomfort on the scalp if not installed properly or if worn for extended periods.

The braids used to anchor the wefts can also cause breakage or damage to the natural hair if too tight or if left in for too long. Additionally, sew-in extensions require regular maintenance and may not be suitable for those with very fine or thin hair, as the braids can be visible or bulky. Overall, sew-in extensions offer a secure and versatile option for adding length and volume to the hair, but they may not be the best choice for those looking for a more affordable or low-maintenance solution.

Pros and Cons of Fusion Hair Extensions

Fusion hair extensions, also known as bonded extensions, are a semi-permanent method that involves attaching individual strands of hair to the natural hair using a keratin bond or adhesive. One of the main advantages of fusion extensions is that they provide a natural look and feel, as the individual strands blend seamlessly with the natural hair and can be styled in various ways. They also offer a long-lasting solution that can withstand regular washing and styling without coming loose.

Additionally, fusion extensions are suitable for all hair types and textures and can be used to add length, volume, or highlights to the hair. However, fusion extensions can be more expensive than other methods and may require professional application and removal, which can add to the overall cost. Another drawback of fusion extensions is that they can cause damage to the natural hair if not applied or removed properly.

The heat or adhesive used to attach the individual strands can also cause discomfort or irritation on the scalp if not done carefully. Additionally, fusion extensions require regular maintenance and may not be suitable for those with very fine or thin hair, as the individual strands can be visible or bulky. Overall, fusion extensions offer a natural and versatile option for adding length and volume to the hair, but they may not be the best choice for those looking for a more affordable or temporary solution.

Pros and Cons of Microbead Hair Extensions

Advantages of Microbead Extensions

One of the main advantages of microbead extensions is that they provide a natural look and feel, as the small sections blend seamlessly with the natural hair and can be styled in various ways. They also offer a long-lasting solution that can withstand regular washing and styling without coming loose.

Suitability and Versatility

Microbead extensions are suitable for all hair types and textures and can be used to add length, volume, or highlights to the hair.

Drawbacks and Considerations

However, microbead extensions can be more expensive than other methods and may require professional application and removal, which can add to the overall cost. Another drawback of microbead extensions is that they can cause damage to the natural hair if not applied or removed properly. The metal beads used to attach the sections can also cause discomfort or irritation on the scalp if not done carefully. Additionally, microbead extensions require regular maintenance and may not be suitable for those with very fine or thin hair, as the metal beads can be visible or bulky.

Choosing the Right Hair Extension Method for You

In conclusion, there are various methods of applying hair extensions, each with its own set of pros and cons. Whether you’re looking for a temporary change or a more permanent solution, it’s important to consider your lifestyle, budget, and desired look before choosing a method. Clip-in extensions offer a convenient and cost-effective option for adding temporary length and volume to your hair but may not be suitable for everyday wear.

Tape-in extensions provide a natural and low-maintenance option but may require professional application and repositioning every few weeks. Sew-in extensions offer a secure and versatile option but may cause tension or discomfort on the scalp if not installed properly. Fusion extensions provide a natural and long-lasting solution but may be more expensive and require regular maintenance.

Microbead extensions offer a natural and versatile option but may also be more expensive and require professional application and removal. Ultimately, it’s important to consult with a professional stylist who can assess your needs and recommend the best method for your hair type and lifestyle. By weighing the pros and cons of each method carefully, you can make an informed decision that will help you achieve your desired look while maintaining the health and integrity of your natural hair.

Straight hair is typically smooth and sleek, while curly hair is more susceptible to frizz and tangling.

Knowing one’s hair type is crucial for choosing extensions that seamlessly blend with natural hair. Hair type also influences the most suitable application method for extensions. Clip-in extensions are often recommended for straight or wavy hair, while tape-in or sew-in extensions may be more appropriate for curly or kinky hair textures.

By identifying one’s hair type, individuals can make informed decisions about extension types and application methods, ensuring a natural and cohesive appearance.

Semi-Permanent Solutions

Another option is tape-in extensions, which are semi-permanent and are applied using a special adhesive. These extensions are lightweight and comfortable to wear, making them a great choice for those with fine or thin hair.

Long-Lasting Results

Sew-in extensions, also known as weaves, involve braiding the natural hair and sewing the extensions into the braids. This method is best suited for those with thick or coarse hair and provides a long-lasting and natural-looking result. Additionally, fusion or bonded extensions involve attaching small sections of hair extensions to the natural hair using a bonding agent. This method offers a seamless and natural look but requires professional application and regular maintenance.

By understanding the different types of hair extensions available, you can choose the option that best suits your needs and lifestyle.

Matching Your Hair Texture:

Matching the texture of your hair is essential when selecting the right hair extensions. Whether you have straight, wavy, curly, or kinky hair, it’s important to choose extensions that closely resemble the texture of your natural hair. This will ensure that the extensions blend seamlessly with your own hair, creating a natural and cohesive look.

For those with straight hair, silky and smooth extensions will complement their natural texture perfectly. Wavy-haired individuals should opt for extensions with a slight wave pattern to match their own hair’s texture. Those with curly or kinky hair should choose extensions that mimic their curl pattern and thickness for a seamless blend.

By matching the texture of your hair with the extensions, you can achieve a flawless and natural look that seamlessly integrates with your own hair. This attention to detail will ensure that your extensions are undetectable and enhance your overall appearance.

Consider Your Hair Length:

When choosing hair extensions, it’s important to consider your current hair length and the desired result you want to achieve. If you have short hair and want to add length, you may opt for longer extensions to achieve a dramatic transformation. On the other hand, if you have medium-length hair and are looking to add volume, you may choose shorter extensions to enhance the thickness of your natural hair.

It’s also important to consider the placement of the extensions based on your hair length. For example, individuals with short hair may need to strategically place the extensions to ensure a seamless blend, while those with longer hair have more flexibility in placement. By considering your current hair length and desired outcome, you can select the right length and placement of extensions to achieve the look you desire.

Whether you want to add length, volume, or both, there are options available to suit your specific needs.

Choosing the Right Color:

Choosing the right color for your hair extensions is crucial in achieving a natural and seamless blend with your natural hair. It’s important to match the color of the extensions to your own hair color as closely as possible. This will ensure that the extensions blend seamlessly with your natural hair, creating a flawless and undetectable result.

If you have multi-tonal or highlighted hair, consider selecting extensions that match the different shades in your natural hair for a more realistic look. Additionally, if you’re unable to find an exact match for your hair color, consider purchasing slightly lighter extensions and having them professionally dyed to match your natural color. By choosing the right color for your hair extensions, you can achieve a cohesive and natural look that enhances your overall appearance.

Paying attention to detail when it comes to color matching will ensure that your extensions seamlessly integrate with your own hair.

Maintenance and Care:

Caring for Clip-in Extensions

For clip-in extensions, it’s important to gently brush them after each use to remove any tangles or knots. Additionally, washing them regularly with a mild shampoo and conditioner will help keep them clean and fresh.

Maintenance for Tape-in and Fusion Extensions

Tape-in and fusion extensions require regular maintenance appointments with a professional hairstylist to ensure they remain secure and in good condition.

General Care Tips

Regardless of the type of extensions you choose, it’s important to avoid using excessive heat styling tools and harsh products that can damage the extensions. Using a heat protectant spray before styling and opting for sulfate-free products will help preserve the quality of the extensions. By following the recommended maintenance and care guidelines for your specific type of extensions, you can prolong their lifespan and keep them looking beautiful and natural.

Consulting with a Professional Hairstylist:

When it comes to choosing and applying hair extensions, consulting with a professional hairstylist is highly recommended. A hairstylist can assess your natural hair type, texture, length, and color to recommend the best type of extensions for you. They can also provide expert advice on maintenance and care to ensure that your extensions look their best.

Additionally, a professional hairstylist has the skills and experience to properly apply the extensions for a seamless and natural look. They can customize the placement of the extensions based on your specific needs and desired outcome, ensuring that they blend flawlessly with your natural hair. Furthermore, a hairstylist can offer valuable tips on styling techniques and products that are suitable for maintaining your extensions.

By consulting with a professional hairstylist, you can make informed decisions about choosing the right type of extensions and receive personalized guidance on how to care for them properly. In conclusion, understanding your hair type, selecting the right type of extensions, matching the texture and color of your natural hair, considering your current hair length, proper maintenance and care, as well as consulting with a professional hairstylist are all essential factors in choosing the right hair extensions. Hair extensions do require maintenance and to be looked after to ensure that you get the most from them. Here we look at some tips to maintain your hair extensions, so they last you as long as possible.

Washing the hair – You should ensure that you wash your hair and extensions two to three times a week. You should never leave washing your hair for longer than a week as you need to ensure your scalp and natural hair are clean.

Use the right products – Extensions do require you to use products designed specifically for them as the natural oils will not travel to the extensions which will result in them becoming dry and damaged. Use hydrating shampoos and conditioning and moisturise your extensions with a treatment once a week. Also use heat protective spays always.

Protect the hair – Protecting the extensions is important. Using satin pillowcases will help to protect the hair from friction and breakage.

Brush your hair – Ensure that your brush the extensions properly using a hair extension brush which will avoid your hair become frayed or tangled. Use detangling sprays to help with this.

Use minimal heat – Heat is damaging to your hair extensions. Use heat protection sprays and lower the heat used on your hair.

Bonds – If your extensions are bonded or on micro rings separate these at least once a day to minimise the hair matting.

Condition – Once a week we advise to use a deep conditioning mask to make sure your extensions stay soft and healthy.

Do not sleep with wet extensions – This can cause matting and damage and is very much against advice.

Colouring – If you want to colour your extensions, we recommend you always use a salon for this to make sure the colour is even.

Choosing Hair Extensions, Human Hair vs Synthetic Hair, Pros and Cons

When choosing hair extensions, we are asked a lot what the difference between human and
synthetic hair is. Here we look at the pros and cons of both options to help you make an informed decision about what is best for you.

Synthetic hair extensions:

Synthetic hair is man made from fibres to look like real hair.

Pros of synthetic hair –

  • Huge range of colours and styles
  • Low cost and affordable
  • Low maintenance – no washing or styling required

Cons of synthetic hair –

  • Less natural looking
  • Can not be styled using heat or coloured
  • Do not last as long as human hair extensions

With regards to synthetic hair if you are on a tight budget or if your want to change your look regularly then synthetic hair is a good choice. Synthetic hair won’t look as natural as human hair and it wont feel as natural but it is a good choice if you want to choose different looks often at a low cost.

Human Hair extensions are made of real 100% human hair.

Pros of human hair –

  • Natural looking and natural feel due to the hair being real hair
  • Can be washed, styled and coloured the same as your normal hair
  • Long lasting If looked after up to a year or even more

Cons of human hair –

  • More expensive than synthetic hair
  • More maintenance is needed for washing and styling
  • Colours are more limited with the hair being real

If you are looking for hair extensions for a very special occasion such as a wedding or if you want to invest in extensions that will last longer than a few weeks human hair is your best choice.

How long do hair extensions last?

Hair extensions are an investment and many of our clients ask how long do hair extensions last. The answer to this varies and is dependent on the type of hair extension and how well you look after them. Here we will look at the different types of hair extensions and how long on average they will last to help you make an informed decision of which hair extension is best for you.

Pre bonded hair extensions

Pre bonded hair extensions also known as fusion hair extensions attach to the root of your natural hair. They are done with a bonding glue gun. This hair is natural human hair and gives you a fuller head of hair as well as being able to add additional length.

Pre bonded hair will require specialist shampoo and conditioner and also heat protection to ensure the hair is kept in good condition. You will need the have the hair re-positioned every 2-3 months to help prevent damage and due to natural hair growth.

Pre bonded hair extensions usually last around 3-4 months.

Tape hair extensions

Tape hair extensions are taped to the natural hair using adhesive hair tape. These are becoming more popular as tend to be less damaging to your natural hair. You should ensure that you never brush tape hair extensions when they are wet as this will damage the adhesive. Tape hair extensions should be cared for as you would natural hair and use as little heat as possible, You will need to re apply tape hair extensions every 4-8 weeks or so.

Clip in hair extensions

These are favourites of ours here at Koko Hair and we have a great range to choose from. It really depends how often you use them as to how long clip in extensions will last you. They are the least damaging hair extensions to your natural hair as they simply clip to your natural root. If clip in hair is human hair you should use heat protection and sulphur free hair extension shampoo and conditioner.  Synthetic hair can be sprayed with diluted fabric conditioner to keep it fresh. If cared for well clip in hair extensions can last for a very long time. We do recommend only washing every 30 wears or so if possible.

Weft hair extensions

Weft hair extensions are sewn into you hair where is braided at the root and sewn using a needle and thread. This method is a great option if you have thick hair naturally. These hair extensions last around 8 weeks before they need to be re applied. You should never leave them for more than 4 months as this will damage your hair growth. Sewn in hair is almost always human hair so should be taken care of in the same way.

Micro rings

Micro rings are attached using sections of your natural hair and attached with small rings. No glue or heat is used. These are also done using human hair so need to be looked after as you would natural hair. These hair extensions last around 3 months before they need to be re applied and tightened.

How long do hair extensions last?

Many people wonder how long your hair extensions will last. This all depends on the type of hair extensions you choose and how well you look after them.

On average it is thought that clip in human hair extensions of good quality will last around 3 to 6 months depending on how you treat them and how often you wear them. Synthetic clip in hair extensions have a average life span of around 1 to 2 months. Human hair extensions can last up to around 12 months if you treat them well and care for them.

How many washes will your hair extensions last for?

It will vary for different brands and qualities however on average the following is around how many washes you can expect to achieve from your hair extensions:

Regular hair extensions – 5 to 15 washes

Remy hair extensions – 10 to 30 washes

Premium remy hair extensions – 20 to 40 washes

Virgin hair extensions -60 to 100 washes

Our clip in hair extensions are of high quality and if you take care of them correctly have been found to last up to 12 months. This is on the basis that you follow our advice and maintenance provided with your hair extensions when they arrive. We cannot stress how important it is to care for your hair extensions correctly to ensure that they last as long as possible.

Synthetic hair extensions can last around 2 years as they are not worn every day usually just a couple of times a month. If you use your human hair clip in extensions every single day they will not last as long as if you wear them just for special occasions.

Another tip for your hair extensions to keep them lasting longer is to brush them regularly and well. If you do not brush regularly the hair will mat and tangle and fizz. Brushing your extensions daily will get rid of tangles and keeps the extensions looking healthy and in good condition meaning they will last you longer.

It is also important to wash your hair extensions correctly. You do not have to wash your extensions often but you do need to wash them with care and patience.

Human hair extensions can be styled using heat however it is important not to use heat too often and not at a too high heat. You should also always use heat protection on your hair extensions just as you would with your own hair.

You can dye human hair extensions  but if you want them to last a long time we don’t advise to dye the hair extensions if you can help it.

In conclusion your hair extensions will last longer given the correct care and maintenance.
